- Decide to do a science fair project
- Choose a topic
- Research the topic
- Decide on a project
- Make sure that the project is allowed (this differs depending upon the division/grade)
- Create a hypothesis for the project
- Create a detailed research plan
- * Fill in ISEF forms with project information
- * Get ISEF forms signed
- * Post project information in an online application (optional if precertification not required)
- ** Get project approved by MSEF. This is only required for projects that need precertification.

- Senior division only: Mail the original completed ISEF forms to MSEF. Keep a COPY of all forms.
- Print out the check-in and check-out form (part of the online registration process). Elementary students will print out the Elementary division MSEF form.
